Shirley Ip is Principal Keyboard of the Hong Kong Philharmonic. She has also played with the American Symphony Orchestra, I Musici de Montréal and the Kammerensemble.
Throughout her career she has performed solo pieces including landmark piano concertos such as Beethoven’s Triple Concerto and Haydn’s Piano Concerto No 11, and orchestral works such as Saint-Saëns's Carnival of the Animals with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, as well as Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No 2 with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. She has also premiered works by Hong Kong composers and performed numerous works by innovators of the 20th century including Stravinsky, Lutoslawski, Górecki and Messiaen.
In her solo recital for RTHK-Radio 4’s series Music Beyond Borders, Shirley Ip devised the Spanish piano programme and performed Turina’s Danzas Gitanas (Gipsy Dances) in its entirety. With the exception of the well-known Sacromonte, a complete recording of this work is difficult to find. She also performed the seldom heard Valses Sentimentales by Granados.
Shirley Ip graduated at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She was a recipient of the Jockey Club overseas scholarship and studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Among her honours and awards are the Dominion Fellowship Trust Gift and the Else Horn Gift. Ip was awarded first prize at the Oxford Music Festival and second prize at the Croft Music Competition.
Shirley Ip teaches at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Chinese University of Hong Kong.
